Does Thermage Really Work?

Understanding This Popular Skin Tightening Treatment

As we age, our skin tends to look more drawn as we lose that contoured look along our jawline. Smile lines become more apparent, and sagging skin is frustratingly more common. If only your skin could retain that tight, firm appearance!

We’ve got some good news for you: it can! Despite your frustrations, there are solutions, ones that don’t involve time-consuming, invasive treatment.

Simply put, if you’ve been feeling at a loss when it comes to aging, sagging skin, and aren’t keen on the prospect of a surgical solution, Thermage® CPT offers an amazing alternative.

Unlike surgical procedures, Thermage® involves minimal downtime and directly targets one of the chief causes of aging, sagging skin: collagen loss. As we age, the collagen in our skin gradually breaks down. In fact, we produce less collagen the older we get!

This two-fold effect reduces the mass beneath our skin, which makes our skin look older.

But the big question is: does Thermage® actually work? More importantly, will it work for you?

Let’s take a closer look:

What is Thermage®?

Thermage® is an advanced skin-tightening procedure that’s designed to stimulate the production of collagen in ageing, sagging skin.

Contrary to popular belief, Thermage® is not a laser treatment, despite relying on heat action to generate results.

Thermage® uses radiofrequency (RF) technology to deliver gentle heating action to the deep dermis. This helps tighten the collagen that exists in your skin while simultaneously stimulating the production of new collagen.

It’s actually not the heating action that causes your skin to lift and tighten, but rather the immediate contraction of collagen in your skin. This immediate contraction is followed by a gradual tightening.

Am I a Good Candidate?

This is the big question!

The fact of the matter is that, as amazing as Thermage® is, it’s not for everyone. While it can tighten skin and offers a gentle lift, this treatment is more about subtle improvements, not a dramatic change.

As such, if you’ve got mild-to-moderate facial or jowl sagging, sagging eyelids, or gently sagging skin elsewhere on your body, you’re probably an ideal candidate.

For those who have mild to moderate signs of aging, skin tightening can be used for subtly effective results without the need to go through a surgical process.

If you’ve got more severe skin laxity, then another approach may be necessary, or you may need to use Thermage® in conjunction with one or more additional treatments.

The best candidates are typically between 35 and 65 years old with mild sagging or laxity. True jowls, sun-damaged skin, and lots of wrinkles will require another approach, most of the time. We recommend keeping realistic expectations for this and every treatment.

The Benefits of Thermage®

Even with its subtle approach and results, Thermage® skin tightening can make you look much younger, reducing the signs of aging significantly over the course of just a few months. As it is not a surgical procedure, it doesn’t carry with it the risks of surgical procedures, such as anesthesia and downtime.

These skin tightening treatments can be done during your lunch break, doesn’t require time off, and is subtle enough that it will not be noticed immediately: results are typically cumulative subtle. While you might not notice an immediate effect, the long-term results are impressive.

Plus, you’re stimulating collagen production in your skin. Collagen loss is one of the biggest symptoms of ageing, and restoring and generating new collagen can make a significant difference in reducing these common signs.

This treatment helps rejuvenate your skin, all without changing the original contours of your body. The natural results of this treatment can be maintained for years.

How to Prepare for Treatment

Before a Thermage® treatment, we clean your skin using a 70% alcohol solution before applying a grid stencil. This stencil helps us target the treatment area, and it’s removed immediately after your treatment. We also apply a liquid conducting gel.

Generally, there’s no real prep other than what we provide at the clinic. This is a zero-downtime procedure, after all, so there’s very little that needs to be done.

Thermage® uses gentle heating action, so you likely won’t need any pain medication, though we can give you a mild sedative if you’re very anxious or have low pain tolerance. Just make sure you’ve got another ride home, if that’s the case!

And really, that’s about it for prep!

What to Expect

Treatment takes about an hour or two. Immediately after your treatment, you can return to your usual day-to-day activities. Your skin will likely feel a bit warm and may have some very mild redness. In all likelihood, you won’t even feel like you’ve had a procedure.

There’s no downtime with this treatment, so there’s no need to worry about bruising. Discomfort is also rare.

We do recommend avoiding excessively hot water, or non-prescription skin creams. Basically, be gentle with your skin!

After a day, you’ll be completely back to normal—albeit with greater collagen production, tighter skin, and a gentle lift that others can’t help but notice.

If you’re wondering how to tighten loose skin and eliminate the signs of aging, Thermage® can help. Not only is it a fast, non-invasive process, but it can be applied multiple times to get the results that you need—and there’s no downtime involved. Contact the clinic today to get more information on the process and to start developing your treatment plan.
