How Intense Pulsed Light Therapy Can Reduce the Appearance of Rosacea Symptoms

Rosacea is an all-too-common skin condition that causes redness and flushing of the face. For some, it can be a source of embarrassment, self-consciousness, and of low self-esteem.

This condition typically appears in adulthood and can be triggered by a variety of environmental, hormonal, and nutritional factors.

So what can be done about it?

One solution is Intense Pulse Light therapy. Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy reduces redness and the appearance of blood vessels. IPL therapy safely delivers light to treat several types of skin imperfections ranging from sun damage to mild melasma, broken facial capillaries, flushing, and overall facial redness. This therapy can help patients feel more confident with their skin.

What Causes Rosacea? What Are The Symptoms?

Rosacea symptoms usually appear on the cheeks, nose, chin, and forehead, and can include:

  • Telangiectasia, dilated blood vessels
  • Erythema, redness of the skin
  • Papules and pustules, small bumps and pimples
  • Ocular rosacea, redness and irritation in the eyes
  • Burning, stinging, or itchy skin
  • Rhinophyma, in extreme cases—a change in the skin’s texture, sometimes causing the nose to appear enlarged or bulbous.

Most people with rosacea have fair skin and are 30 or older. Rosacea is also more common in women than men, and what’s more, women tend to develop this condition at a younger age. There is no single known cause of rosacea. Experts suspect a combination of genetics, hormones, and environmental factors may be at play.

Rosacea flare-ups occur when the blood vessels in the face expand. There are several triggers that may cause flare-ups:

  • Exercise
  • Stress
  • Hot weather
  • Cold weather
  • Sun exposure
  • Wind exposure
  • Hot baths
  • Alcohol
  • Spicy foods

It’s nearly impossible to avoid all these triggers in life. But there are more realistic treatment options to reduce the appearance of rosacea.

Intense Pulsed Light Therapy

IPL therapy uses pulsed light to target the dermis—the deeper layers of skin. This light ranges in wavelengths to treat various parts of the condition. It also specifically targets reds, browns, and collagen.

When the light reaches dilated blood vessels, it coagulates the blood within. In turn, the blood vessels collapse, breaking apart before your body reabsorbs them. IPL also helps remove brown spots and stimulate collagen. The result is an improved overall appearance of the skin.

Results of IPL Treatment for Rosacea

Depending on the severity of the symptoms, you may need three to six treatments to see ideal results. Treatments are spaced out by a few weeks to a month. Each treatment session is about 30 minutes long. A combination of skin care, nutrition, and touch-ups can help prevent future flare-ups.

Avoiding triggers remains the best advice to control flare-ups. But for some this will still not be enough or simply impossible. In these instances consider IPL treatment for rosacea instead! This can help you reduce embarrassing symptoms and be confident with your skin again.
