A New Approach to Understanding our Patients Wishes

‘’The MD Codes’’ is a revolutionary step-by-step approach to treating patients with Botox and Juvederm Fillers. They were created by plastic surgeon, world-renowned injector and international speaker, Dr. Mauricio De Maio of Brazil. Over the last six years, I have had the privilege of being trained by him, I’ve seen him give talks and live demos in New York, London (UK) and here in Canada on three separate occasions. In my world, he is a true visionary when it comes to injectables. His grasp of the underlying multifactorial processes at play in facial ageing processes and how to reverse these processes with Juvederm dermal fillers and Botox Cosmetic is in my opinion, unparalleled.

The purpose of this blog is not to focus specifically on the MD Codes approach. I want to refer you back to a previous blog I wrote entitled: ‘’Unlocking the MD Code of Facial Rejuvenation’’ (June 2016). Today, I will write specifically about the 8 MD Codes of Emotional Attributes which are an integral part of Dr. Di Maio’s approach to facial rejuvenation.

What are the Emotional Attributes of the MD Codes?

The Emotional Attributes of the MD Codes are a set of eight emotions that Dr. Di Maio believes reflect what most of us feel as we become witness to the depressing signs of ageing on our faces.

They are divided into two groups.

A table with two rows and 4 columns presents the 8 various MD codes of emotional attributes.

The Negative Emotional Attributes, which are wanting to look:

  • 1. Less Angry
  • 2. Less Saggy
  • 3. Less Tired
  • 4. Less Sad

The Positive Emotional Attributes, which are wanting to look:

  • 5. Younger
  • 6. More Attractive
  • 7. More Slim in the Face
  • 8. More Feminine
These 8 Emotional Attributes are essentially a new tool to help Cosmetic Physicians like myself, better understand our patient’s feelings and desires that go beyond the wish for correction of a specific fold or wrinkle. They open up a completely different discourse. By integrating the 8 Emotional Attributes as an added step during the initial cosmetic visit, I can unveil the underlying motivations and feelings that bring new clients into my office.

I still start my skin consults with opening questions such as, ‘’What brought you in today?’’ and ‘’Point specifically to two or three areas that bother you the most on your face?’’ because although basic, they still provide important information to me pertaining specifically to what that patient believes he/she wants. But to obtain a deeper understanding of the underlying emotions of my clients, I now often use my new visual chart displaying the 8 Emotional Attributes of the MD Codes.

This visual tool looks exactly as the picture accompanying this blog. All I do is show this chart to my clients and ask them to select three of eight emotional attributes on it which best describes their current emotional state and their goals in receiving cosmetic treatments from me. Once my patient has identified, for example, that they want to look less tired, less saggy, more attractive and younger looking then I can set out a tailored treatment plan for them to reach these goals.

It is important for patients to understand, however, that:

– This may require one, two or sometimes three visits to get to the final results,

– And that we can only achieve Positive Emotional Attributes (younger, more attractive, slimmer and more feminine) after we have corrected the Negative Emotional Attributes (angry, saggy, tired and sad) first.

Integrating the Emotional Attributes of the MD Codes into the initial consultation is definitively a shift in thinking on how to have the initial cosmetic conversation with my patients. But by using this approach, I ensure that by the end of their treatment sessions with me, their appearance is more aligned with how they wanted to feel about themselves when they decided to embark on this rejuvenating journey.
