Our eyes aren’t just the focal point of our faces. They convey to others how we feel, whether we’re happy, sad, energized, or tired. Unfortunately, because the skin around the eyes is so delicate and thin, it is especially vulnerable to age-related changes and is one of the first places where visible signs of aging emerge.
Women instinctively know how important eyes are to their overall appearance. When asked in a formal study conducted by Leger Marketing (May 2011), eyes came first on the list of facial features women wanted to emphasize, while lips and cheeks were second and third, respectively.
Everyday clients ask me if there is anything I can do to make their eyes look bigger, less tired and younger looking. After all, there’s only so much make-up and creams can do. Thankfully, there’s plenty that can be done by a trained medical aesthetics professional to get you the results you want.
Let me guide you through the nonsurgical solutions I have to offer to remedy to the many eye issues:
If you want to soften wrinkles around the eyes (including crow’s feet), Botox® Cosmetic is an excellent option. These injections “open up” the eyes and diminish fine lines. They can also treat sagging eyelids and descending eyebrows, providing a bit of lift to the targeted area and restoring a feminine look.
Temple volume loss or hollowness can be easily remedied by injecting small amounts of hyaluronic acid deep in the temples with dermal fillers such as Juvederm® or Restylane®. This volume loss is typically seen in individuals with thin skin or advanced age, but can also show up in younger patients that are very active physically. Runners are especially prone to this phenomenon.
An interesting added benefit to this treatment is that the fuller temples give better support to the eyebrows and as a result the brows actually elevate as well creating an overall younger, healthier look.
Tear Troughs Fillers
To treat sunken Tear Troughs and dark circles, one of the most common eye issues that patients complain about, I use dermal fillers such as Juvederm Volbella or Restylane Fine lines. This is a delicate area and must be treated as such. The trick here is to use the right product, the right technique and aim for about 70% correction. If done well, though, the results are immediate and absolutely amazing, turning sunken, tired eyes into bright and smiling ones.
To treat sagging and crepiness of the upper eyelids, the solution is Thermage® CPT skin tightening. Thermage® CPT skin tightening for the eyes is a true “no downtime” procedure. There are no incisions, no bleeding and no needles involved. The end results are seen 6 months post-treatment and typically last up to 2 years.
Latisse is the first and only prescription eyelash growth product approved by both the FDA and Health Canada to gradually make your own eyelashes longer, fuller and darker. Results are truly impressive.
As a complement to all the options above, don’t forget to incorporate appropriate eye creams in the morning and night. The skin around the eyes is not like the rest of the face. It needs special care and creams meant to be used for this delicate skin.
Finally, I would like to remind all my blog followers that the key to preventing premature aging of the eyes and the delicate skin around them, it is very important to protect them against the damaging UV rays of the sun. This is best accomplished by wearing both sunblock and large 100% UV protective glasses.
